I'm wanting to build a small 3-5 gallon aquarium. Also I am not sure if I should use plexiglass or plain glass. Anyone know of any designs, how-tos, etc?

A DIY aquarium is not very hard, but a nice 5 gal is what? 5 bucks. Even a kit with filter and light cost maybe $30. If you want to build a bigger tank, i am not really sure about it, but typically you make a frame of plywood, then silicone the glass. Try asking here in the DIY section http://www.fishforums.net/, though there are articles here http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_list.php Seriously, a 5 gal i s not worth it, as the price for a tube of silicone may cost more than the tank.

I can't tell you how to build one. Maybe you could go to diy.com and see if they have any suggestions. Frankly, I would go to Walmart, Kmart, or some pet store and just buy one, it would cut down on the guess work. In addition, most have the start up equipment with them (filters, heater, thermometer, etc). The most important thing is to decide on whether you want a freshwater or salt water tank. After you make that decision, then go to a reputable fish store and let they help you pick the fish that will work best for your tank.

There are some do-it-yourself instructions on building an aquarium at this site:
http://www.aquariacentral.com/diy/aquarium.shtml
and information on how to use acrylic to build different projects at this site:
http://www.aquariacentral.com/diy/acrylic.shtml

After looking some more, I found another site that may be even better that has specific instructions on tank building located at the site listed below. Hope this helps!

glass. plexiglass will warp and bend under the pressure of the water which will produce less than desired results. make sure you sure clear epoxy to bind the glass together, then coat over with some sort of latex/silicone covering to make it water tight. obviously apply it to both in and outside the tank.

For something so small the cheapest and easiest thing to do it to just go buy one. What kind of fish do you plan on getting? Since it's so small I'm hoping it's just a betta.

If you want your fish to live, go to your local petstore and get one for around $10

It costs more to make them then to just buy them.
