Any of you morons who said that rockets only go 2600 mph are really stupid. that is not even escape velocity.. the shuttle is moving at 17000 mph so if your going to answer a question try not to be that stupid. elayne, and most of all Kevin R. is a dumb ***

OK dink...here's your answer

Oh you emperor of enlightened thought at 17000MPH you not only have 2SRB (Solid Rocket Boosters) and 3SME (Shuttle main engines) going you are also burning 500,000 gallons of fuel a second. That is what we call "lift off". Not flying to the moon.

You see King Cranium, the Space Shuttle having been first flown in 1982 HAS NEVER BEEN TO THE MOON.

Secondly, you lord of bulging brain cells. The Apollo capsules that did go to the moon had to conserve their fuel for the trip so they could fire their retro-rockets and slow down enough to open the parachute and land safely!

Thirdly, you master of thought and logic, since it was a science mission NASA planed the trip to be slow so that all sorts of tests and experiments could be done.

Finally, oh you with a brain of such power and glory that you use words like moron and dumb ***, the moon has 1/6th the Earths gravity and in order to be caught by it and enter what is called an "orbit" you have to be traveling slow enough.

If you are going to be stupid enough to compare Apollo Capsules to Space Shuttles try not to do it when you're being moronic enough to call other people dumb when people way smarter then you will ever be are waiting around to belittle dinks like you.

If I was Elayne or Kevin R,. I might feel good about that, because that's not even a question and you're making yourself sound ridiculous and vindictive over as silly a matter as rockets and velocity. If your so brilliant, why'd you ask it in the first place?

science is about learning, but no one learns when others act like that.

The rocket leaves Earth at 25,000 miles per hour. The rocket engine only fires for a few minutes to get up to that speed and then it coasts the rest of the way. As it coasts away from Earth, gravity slows it down. Within a few hours the speed is down to 10,000 miles an hour and by the time it gets near the Moon the speed is down to about 3,000 miles per hour.

in the yank football catagory, this question is requested as a comic tale now because it really is been requested a lot. "what's the fairway dot on the lower back of the quarterback's helmet for?" truth is it tells the ref that that participant is mic'd to the coach, yet hte funniest answer changed into; "It ability it changed into 40% off:

I thought escape velocity was closer to 22,000 mph. What is seven miles a second?

hmmmm. ok.

I'm glad I'm not Kevin or Elayne. I wouldn't want somebody supposedly intelligent like yourself hating on me!
