Isn't he just showing how dumb he really is? I mean, if I buy a box of chocolates, isn't it highly likely there will be chocolates in that box? I'm not very likely to find bananas in that box, am I?
Am I the only one who see's the absurdity in his statement?

That's hilarious!!! I laughed out loud and I'm at work! That's so true! You know you'll get chocolate, and you can look on the cover for the different types.

Obviously, you have never been given a box of chocolate. Because if you had, you would know that there are different types of filling in the chocolates. Given that info, what Forest Gump said makes lots of sense. Life is unpredictable, and so is what you get when you bite into a piece of chocolate from a box with mixed chocolate filling.

LOL sweeetie its because there are A LOT OF DIFFERENT kinds of choclates in there. Like different falvors. And you know in life how sometimes you get what you want and other times you dont get what you want....and then there are those times when you dont even know what you are going to get.....so what Forrest Gump meant was when he reached into that box of chocolates he had no idea what kind of chocolate he was gonna get. Like in life....you dont know whats gonna come up...atleast not 100 percent of the time.

Life is like a box of chocolates, is a metaphor, explaining that no matter who you are you never know your future, it may be good or bad or something completely different

It is absurd, but not for th reason you think. He knows hes gonna find chocolate, but he doesn't know what he is gonna find inside the chocolates. It is absurd because he is to dumb to read a map telling him which chocolates have what inside. If he read the map, he wouldn't be surprised.

boxes of assorted chocolates (of the variety that Gump was referring to) used to come in all sorts of flavors. sometimes you'd bite into a chocolate with an almond inside, and sometimes you'd get strawberry creme filling. you never knew which kind you'd get, until you bit or broke it. and when Gump was young, those boxes didn't have labels to tell you what was in them.

Yes, perhaps you are the only one.

The point is that each chocolate is different on the inside, and that you can't tell if you're going to get a caramel one or a raspberry one, until you bit into it.

you are an over-analyist. if you say life is like a box of chocolates, hes talking about the filling inside the chocolates. not bananas. stupid.

It's a metaphoric question......... His mom was talking about life, and what it's going to bring. You just never know what life will be like in a certain situation. He's not talking about chocolates, he's talking (or rather his mother) is talking about life in general.

You have a vague idea of what's in there, but I can't tell you the number of times I've gone for what I thought was a caramel and it was a chocolate fudge.
