If your drive is a DVD-R, then you cannot do what you want to. If it is a DVD-R/RW, then you can.

Just use your CD burning software as you have with the broken drive, and somewhere in the software it will allow you to change the burning drive to the DVD-R/RW. A DVD-R/RW drive supports CD burning as well.

Turn off the computer, open the case and unplug the power to the broken drive. Turn on the computer, it will only recognize the DVD drive. As long as you have a DVD+-RW you should be back in business.
