Families are selected randomly to be "Neillson" families. They are given a box that connects to a data line and records who watches what shows and stats about that person. Male, female, age, time, etc.
So, 17 year old daughter walks into the room and turns on "Friends", she enters that info into the box. 89 year old Grandma comes in later and turns on "Jeopardy", then enters that into the box, etc.
All the information that is recorded from all the families over a period of time is passed on to be catergorized and turned into the "ratings" that help companies learn what shows are doing well with what type of audience.

I was told once (how true this is i don't exatly know! but anyway) that they measure the viewing by the surges of electricity afterwards like when your watching something and you don't want to move incase you miss a bit so you wait till the end to make a cuppa, do the tea, put the washing on ect, it semed a reasonable answer to my question at the time so i'll go for that!
