they are built on different lasts. Shoes are built on what is called a "last". A running shoe is built strictly for forward movement, also mainly made of mesh materials to vent the shoe. A cross trainer is built on a last which allows sideways support, which running shoes would not have. If you try to work out in a running shoe versus a speciafic cross trainer you will find less support when you are doing lateral movement. Also most cross trainers are built up higher on the sides for support and do not have as much mesh material as running shoes

A running shoe is lighter and should be used solely for running, no walking. Cross Trainers can be used as an every day shoe. Both are considered "athletic shoes".

Running shoes are best for running. You should get them if you are serious about running. Cross trainers are good for you if you do a variety of sports. You could run in them, but running shoes are better: they are probably lighter and have better cushioning and support for high impact from running.

A cross-trainer is built to withstand side-to-side activities and the wear from light running or sprinting (moving forward). Running shoes are only built for that activity, are oftentimes much lighter and cannot withstand much side-to-side activities (the uppers will wear out as fast or faster than the soles).

the treads on the running shoe are smoother & with less traction. The treads on the cross t. shoe may have deeper treads with grip-like bumps to tread over wet, slippery surfaces. The next time you go to a shoe store, check out the difference.

Nothing. It is just marketing by the manufacturer to make it appear different and value-added.
