I don't know how far back then goes, but I think the following bands have held strong through out the years:
U2
REM
Fleetwood Mac
Aerosmith
The Cure
Depeche Mode
Poison
Motley Crew
Bon Jovi

The greatest band of all-time, The Moody Blues. They still tour and sell-out venues regularly. They haven't done a studio album for a while, but I understand one is in the works.
Another is The Hollies. Even though lead singer Allan Clarke retired a couple of years ago, the new lead singer isn't bad. They just released a new album a few months ago on EMI.
And let's not forget Tom Petty. He has a new album coming out later this month.
All are great '60's and '70's artists who just keep on keepin' on and cranking out fantastic music.

well, there aren't many.
Most of the old bands are living off of the old songs and old shows. Bon Jovi went country, Def Leppard did a whole album of covers, KISS is still touring on the old songs, Bob Seger is retired, Nugents last album sucked, AC/DC hasn't done anythng in a while.
How about INXS? New singer but I like the new stuff. Duran Duran's new stuff is okay but andy needs to rip a little more. Lots of the old blues guys are putting out new stuff.

Really as bands get on in years they do tend to become stale. I mean some of my fave old bands have released nothing but rubbish lately, eg Aerosmith who havent made a good album since get a grip, metallica since the black album ect.
Thats not to take away how good they once were, but the star never burns brightly for too long.
Thank god for the new or newish bands like SOAD and Young Heart Attack.

Ive been listening to Dream Theater since 1991 and they just get better on every album ...no one matches thier creativity and expressiveness ...and each album sounds differnt than the last ...try these albums
Octavarium
Scenes from a memory -Metropolis pt 2
Six Degress of Inner Turbulence

Foo Fighters are kind of an old band (they formed in 1995). They're still coming out with very good music today, and I believe it fits under the "Classic Rock" category.

Eric Clapton is still making wonderful music! The guy is a god.
Aerosmith has been making music for the better part of 4 decades, they are still pumping out hits. They are the very definition of staying power!

Aerosmith. There for a while they were just kind of coasting and commercial, but their new Honkin' on Bobo takes them to somehwere they'd not gone before. Great Album. Kudos to them for trying something new!
