I'm of English descent. All I can say about torture in English history is that it's about what you would find in most countries at the same time. Take a look at how the Japanese or the Muslims or the Indians or Russians managed law breakers or rebels. Fortunately England has for the most part become more enlightened and humane in its treament of criminals, and prisoners. What I find appalling is that any country today would still find it desirable or necessary to use torture in punishing or interrogating prisoners, especially in light of research the proves that such treatment does not provide useful information. Torture produces false confessions which is useful only if that is what the torturer wants, but it is not "intelligence."
