Americans did so badly because Bruce Arena didn't do his job right. First of all..a 5-4-1 formation doesn't work...second of all...the second game against Italy....you don't go for a tie Bruce...you go for the win...and Eddie Johnson should have been put in earlier..he should have started the match...this team had potential...I know they have talent...but they didn't believe in themselves...it seems at times like Donovan didn't even want to be there...something was different about this team..something was very wrong...they didn't have chemistry...they weren't the same determined confident team they were in 2002....its too bad...because I really thought the US team would prevail...If they would have played like they did in 2002 and even better...they could have been the team to eliminate Brazil....or even gone Italy's way..they could have beaten Italy and Ghana..and possibly been in the situation Italy is in...they probably wouldn't have needed to dive in the last second to beat Australia...but instead they just got on an airplane and came back too soon...

I support my US Men's National Team, no matter what...by the way, I hate baseball and american football..they shouldn't be considered sports...all they do is stand around like fat pigs and wait for hours to have the ball come to them....who cares about those boring sports...zzzzzzzzzzzz

GO USA! You will have World Cup 2010 to recover and prove that you too can make it up top with the rest of the world...

p.s. soccer players have nothing to do with overpaid and overweight american football players and baseball players..and basketball players....not everybody who lives in the US cares about those boring sports...I rather sleep next to a snake...

ciao!

They did bad b/c the refs number 1 more reason are that the captains played poorly and could have done much better while the D was terrible if everyone could score on the great keller another reason is that was prob the toughest to play teams czech rep. - italy - ghana - thats just bad luck for bein placed in that group american soccer will continue growing bigger and just make the national team better there was also a lot of pressure on them to do well with a very good finsh in the last world cup

americans don't care about soccer. football, basketball are #1s in here. because of that, the athletics join those sports instead of soccer. and TV in here doesn't even show soccer during this World Cup except for some games played in Sunday morning...how stupid is that??? and when World Cup is over, bye bye soccer

and the US soccer players are small comparing to the basketball players. imagine if we have those basketball dudes to play soccer, it'd be awesome cuz they definitely beat out European ones. Peter Crouch so far is the tallest soccer player(not goalie) but look at Shaq or Kobe Bryant, they are wayyyyy taller.

we need to promote soccer in here, America especially on TV

Magrita already gave a great answer but lets analyze this. First of all the US media over hypes their team. Media painted Landon Donovan to be a pleyer in the caliver of Ballack or Ronaldinho. The reality is Donovan could not even play for second division in many European countries. in fact he tried to play in Germany and it lasted for about a month.
Tim Howard is a better goal keeper than Keller but he was not the choice.

They played with one forward. McBride. While he did all he could he can not penetrate great defenses in the world by himself and when compared with players like Toni, Klose, Ronaldo, Henry, Koller - he can not be used in the same sentence. He is a whole 2 levels behind them. Even players like Asamoah of Ghana, Pauletta of Portugal, Borgetti of Mexico are much better players.
Their coach: He is the one that made them play that way. One forward. Used his guys on the wrond wings. Not complementing their dominant foot. Let Donovan stay in the game in every game and embarrass himself. He could have put someone else in with a little more heart. Someone that played football better than he runs his mouth.
The teams performance has got nothing to do with lack of fans in America. Some say oh Americans are new to football, not true. They maybe a little disinterested in the sport but players are players. Now this does attribute to the fact though that MLS is one of the worse leagues in the world. The only international players are either 3rd grade players, or stars that have already retired but want to cash in a little more. If the highlight for MLS is Valderamma there is a problem.
In regards to fan support, the US had tons of fans in Germany. In fact money talks and they were able to get their games in the city of their choice where there was a US air force base. Which is a whole other subject. Because somehow, in a sovereign nation Americans showed how they try to control the whole game. Somehow in the US games German police did not work. It was American police and army personnel that worked the gates. As a reason they showed terrorist threats against the Americans. Now please. Israelis have threats against them all the time but I never saw them taking over security from another nation. WHo gives them this right? And who gives them the right to virtually strip search me before the game. They were incredibly rude,. pushed me and my fiancee against the wall and frisked us. And then people wonder why people make bad comments about Americans, and why the Europeans dont like them.
I am Italian and I spent a lot of time in the US. And I love the country and I love the people. But this Bush driven attacks against everyone and the attitude of "I am better than you" is creating a very unfavorable image. Sorry to bring politics into this discussion but these acts really bothered me in game by the American security, police and the army personnel. In fact we sholuld file a law suit accordingly for my fiancee being literarily thrown on the floor, being embarrassed. and being harrassed, while the Americans with their passports seemed to be jusy going through with no problems. I would not hav ebeen that upset if we were in the US, but they do not have this right in another country.

Also the person below Asteven 11 is an idiot. If Americans were not in Europe it would be horrible. Listen here idiot, your nation is founded by Europeans. In fact it was founded by Europeans who went there for 4 reasons.
1- They were criminals escaping prosecution
2- They were so poor they had nothing to lose.
3- They were a part of the new protestant movement.
4- There were a few rich families establishing themselves for trades in the US.

So my idiot friend, you would not exist if it wasnt for Europeans! And the criminals that went over there in the name of freedom actually robbed the natives from their freedom. And by the way, Europe will probably stay 90% christian but you will be 50% LAtin soon.
To all respectful Americans I am sorry for this part of what I wrote it was just as a response to an idiot below.

Soccer doesn't have the support that football, basketball and baseball have in America. I'm sure if it were as popular here as it is everywhere else in the world, the U.S. team would probably have more talent to choose from as well as more fan support.

It might have something to do with the players' talents! Also, they got caught up in the hype of being ranked too high; especially for a country whose 3/4 of its citizens have no idea what football(soccer) is about.

Because Americans have to understand that playing soccer is a sport not a war, and soccer skills need time to be learned. Fifa made a big mistake in ranking them 5th in the world, in my opinion they should be arount 50th place. They need to understand that soccer is not played with hockey or rugby rules.

Not a popular sport and therefore no infrastructure to bring up good players like in other parts of the world.

I guess they do, especially in Germany who lost the bloody war. Europe is safe because the US is there, otherwise they would be a third world region 90% Muslim...

when they heard the word football, they kept thinking they had to adorn helmets, wear helmets and pick up the ball and start running with it
