I like making/updating/customizing, whatever u call it my avatar. It's kinda fun I guess. So no, I don't think it's a waste of time!!!

Try not to be a perfectionist and calculate every little moment of your life.
It might be stupid but it's taking your mind off other stuff and keeps you entertained for a while.
Just enjoy these little stupid things.

for example ur avator give me indication about u

i think u have a cute smile that is why the avators are so important

not really.
I think it just let's you to have more privacy by letting you choose the pre-designed stuff rather than asking you to put your own pix on it. whether or not you look like your avatar is another story, but i assume your avatar represent who you are.

no, because at least you can make the AV anyway you want to look like and add a little variety!
