The truck is running but I drove it on the highway in second at 60 mph before I realized I was not in drive. the engine is not locked. It just rattles a little in the crank.

Well shoudlnt' cost too much. You figure new bearings new seals, new gaskets, belts. Less than a thousand bucks. Most of it you coudl do yoruself. Do it yoruself send out the head and crank to be balanced and polished. Though i'm not sure a 72 chevy is even worth that much.

You could probably have it rebuilt for $1500.00. But, If it's a common size motor, I would buy new out of the crate engine for about the same price maybe a little bit less. Plus, you would have a better warranty.

Try some heavy (20-50) oil and a can of STP before you spend a ton of money getting new crank bearings. $2000.00 at least. Good luck.

if you can do it yourself you can buy a rebuild kit for a small block 350 for about $350 send the heads out to be polished and checked rehone your cylinder walls have the crank and cam checked its not that bad get a chilton' s book and it has step by step haow to do it

it all depends on what you want to do with the truck auto zone remans are like 1200 or so
