Greatest Player of all time: Jim Brown- hands down.
Greatest player with longevity - Walter Payton. He was great and had terrible teams until the 85 Bears. As for Emmit Smith- he had tremendous talent around him.
RB to have the greatest impact on the Game: Red Grange

Jim Brown ...although I am a huge Herschel Walker fan.
Most premier football experts agree that Brown was the best.
I think Herschel is really underrated. He does not get a lot of respect for leaving school early to go to the USFL. When he comes into the league as Dallas Cowboy, the Cowboys run of talent had ended and the team crumbled around him. The Cowboys traded him for a boatload of draft picks to Minnesota, who never figured out a way to use him properly.
Yet he was a productive player every where he played.

The Big 5
1. Walter Peyton
2. Emmit Smith
3. Jim Brown
4. Barry Sanders
5. Jerome Bettis
O.J. Smpson, Earl Cambell, Franco Harris, John Riggins, Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen and others would follow somewhere in top 20.

I always say that you can never compare eras so I hesitate to say "best ever"....that being said here is my top five in no particular order:
1. Walter Payton-did it with great class
and an undeniable drive
Sweetness!
2. Barry Sanders-probably the best pure runner
and an amazing highlight reel
3. Jim Brown-all he did was kick a$$...guys
were afraid to play against him
4. Eric Dickerson-HOF and the all time single
season record holder...what
a distinct style
5.Gale Sayers-I think he was the greatest open
field runner ever...if he got into
your secondary, game over
So that is my two cents for what it is worth...I am sure someone will come along and complain about it.

Gale Sayers and Jim Brown were obviously very good, but they played in a totally different era. They would be average on today's teams, so I have to throw them out right away. I honestly have to go with Walter Payton. He had it all, good blocking back, would run over would be tacklers, had great hands out of the back field. He did it all. The only way teams could stop him was to stack the line. I also have a lot of respect for Earl Campbell. His career would've been awesome if he would've played on a great team.

There are hoards of excellent athletes at this position:B. Sanders, E. Smith, H. Walker, G. Sayers...the list can go on & on. But since your question is greatest football PLAYER @running back, that will be Hershel Walker. He could run, block, catch, special teams...he did it all. He made/broke records where ever he played.

I would have to go with
1.Walter Payton-He did it on a mediocre team.
2.Barry Sanders-Could have been #1 but early retirement he also bad on a very bad team.
3.Emmitt Smith-Tons of talent around him probably wouldnt be that high on my list but he is the all time leading rusher,Stayed in the game way too long.
