Most veggies need a good amount of sun... planting them in a place where they can get the afternoon Southern/Western sun is best. I'm not sure about the lady from Missouri who said that Tomatoes need shade... maybe the type that she grew. My experience has been that tomatoes adore the sun, the more the better. And I was in Southern California where the sun would've been stronger.
ANYway, best bet is to just go to an online garden site and look at what the recommendation is for various veggies. There are TONS of resources out there. You just need to look it up.
Good luck.

Most vegetables need at least 8-10 hours of direct sunlight to produce the best yield. Some such as lettuce will tolerate slightly less during the heat of the summer.

Some do, some don't. A lot has to do with where you live. In Cleveland, more things need full sun then in Phoniex. But in general few things like sitting in the shade all the time.
