I've often wondered why brutal dictators like Kim Il Sung of North Korea, who keeps his entire nation suffering from starvation so that they have to eat grass, aren't killed by individuals like terminal cancer sufferers who hate him and have nothing to lose personally. I'd attempt it if I was a North Korean and had terminal cancer.

They very rarely make public appearances, they are surrounded by loyal people (loyal under the threat of death), his sidekicks get all they want (money, property, power, women), hard to get to them (you can't just walk up and say hello, you will get shot), and so on and so forth.

Rulers like Kim Jong Il and Saddam Hussein have incredibly elaborate security measures. Unless someone in his immediate inner circle wants to kill him, no one will ever get the opportunity.

Dictators like this last so long because they are completely ruthless. The consequences for even mild disloyalty can be horrendous. Saddam's henchmen actually used a wood chipper to kill some victims. When you are confronted with the possibility of being killed in such a gruesome way, it acts as a huge deterrent.

Typically a dictator is not able to stay in place on their own, but is supported by his military and/or personal police guard. The "smart" dictator makes sure these people always get paid and aren't starving and thus retain some sort of loyalty...since they do not know their fate under some other regime but guessing they'd be worse off. Thus they keep assassins at bay and support their leader.

Why do brutal dictators last so long? Because they are brutal dictators. Do you think they allow a situation that some nut could kill them? Hell no, they are surrounded day and night. Sometimes they even have food tasters to rule out poisoning.

Because our world leaders all have selfish interests.....China,Russia will not allow any UN sanction on North Korea cos of the volume of trade they receive....the rest of the world are either too scared or have their hands tied down in Iraq and Afghanistan!!

They last so long because no one wants to challenge them. They have made their own people scared to do anything, including stand up for their beliefs. Dictators often repress their people and the people are unable to do anything about it.

they rule the people with a combination of terror and ignorance and by letting a certain bunch of cronies have power to ensure he keeps his power, and in the case of kim ll sung his people are brainwashed as soon as they can understand.
