"Azzurro" = "sky blue" in Italian. They are called so because their jersey is that color.
That was the color of the house of Savoia, who ruled Italy when it was still a monarchy (it became a republic after WW2). Since the national soccer team was founded during the monarchy, that color was chosen for their jerseys.

I found this on a website, but I don't think it's right as the team wears dark blue, and I was sure that azurri was something to do with the former italian royal family??

Azzurri refers to the color of the national soccer team's home jersey, and now fans cheer them on with colorful chants alluding to the blue of their home country.

Azzurri means blue, and they choose this color because it was the color of the emblem of the house of SABOYA.
Saboya family ruled Italy in the times where the soccer team played their first world cup (1930) .

Azzurro is Italian for sky blue. If you pluralize azzurro you get Azzurri. All Italian sports teams use azzurro blue in their uniforms, I don't know why but it has been this way since at least 1930 because they were in azzurri blue in that world cup.
