Candidiasis, commonly called yeast infection or thrush, is a fungal infection of any of the Candida species, of which Candida albicans is probably the most common.
Locations
In immunocompetent people, candidiasis can usually only be found in exposed and moist parts of the body, such as:
the oral cavity (oral thrush)
the vagina (vaginal candidiasis or thrush)
folds of skin in the diaper area (diaper rash)
Candidiasis is the second most common cause of vaginal irritation or vaginitis, and can also occur on the male genitals, particularly in uncircumcised men.
In immunocompromised patients, the Candida infection can become systemic, causing a much more serious condition, fungemia.
Causes
Yeast organisms are always present in all people, but are usually prevented from "overgrowth" (uncontrolled multiplication resulting in symptoms) by naturally occurring microorganisms.
At least three quarters of all women will experience candidiasis at some point in their lives. The Candida albicans organism is found in the vaginas of almost all women and normally causes no problems. However, when it gets out of balance with the other "normal flora", such as lactobacilli (which can also be harmed by using douches), an overgrowth and symptoms can result. Pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives and some antibiotics, and diabetes mellitus can lead to an increased incidence in yeast infections.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms are itching and irritation of the vagina and/or vulva, and a whitish or whitish-gray discharge that may have a "yeasty" smell like beer or baking bread, known as a garria. It may resemble cottage cheese. We get the word garria from the French "garrié", which has been defined as meaning "vaginal juice".
Many women mistake the symptoms of the more common bacterial vaginosis for a yeast infection. In a 2002 study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, only 33 percent of women who were self treating for a yeast infection actually had a yeast infection. Instead they had either bacterial vaginosis or a mixed-type infection. Currently, bacterial vaginosis can only be diagnosed during a doctor's visit.

sheree, I am glad you asked this for even though I am of the male persuasion I have a very definite interest in exploring the problems of having a Yest infection. I have not heard of this infection and I am wondering if I should be concerned with any of my many girlfriends having a Yest infection. What part of the body do the Yest infect, is it on the torso or some hidden area that you normally do not see? What happens when the Yest infect does it run, become full of puss, have sores, etc? Is there any cure for Yest? I have asked my girlfriends but they have never heard of having a Yest infection and are of no help to me nor to you, so you will probably have to rely on the Yahoo answer group to give you the answer you are seeking. I certainly hope that having a Yest infection does not interfere with your sex life for then I would be in trouble if any of my girlfriends caught it, can I catch it from them? I am going to watch Yahoo answers closely to see if a good answer comes through concerning catching this Yest infection, so good luck.

Common signs and symptoms of yeast infections include:
itching and irritation in the vagina
redness, swelling, or itching of the vulva (the folds of skin outside the vagina)
a thick, white discharge that can look like cottage cheese and is usually odorless, although it might smell like bread or yeast
pain or burning when urinating or during sex
If you have any of these symptoms, it's important to see your doctor or gynecologist. It's easy to confuse the symptoms of a yeast infection with those of some sexually transmitted diseases and other vaginal infections. Your doctor can give you the right diagnosis.

First of all, it's "yeast" infection. Secondly, if you have one you don't have to pretend it's for "health class"--get a cream from the local pharmacy, they sell it over the counter, should be under 20$ .
AND finally, if it truly is for "health class", you'd get a better grade if you researched it SOMEWHERE ELSE rather than the jamokels that inhabit yahoo answers.

Go to medical journals/informative medical web sites for your answers! try webmd.com This site will only give you personal anectdotes, not medical facts necessarily. Research for class preparation shouldn't include personal "yeast" stories!
