how much I really appreciate what she does, and how much I rely on her "moral compass" to help me in my decision making? What's a good thing to do?

I am an administrative assistant and I would love to be recognized for all the hard work I put into each and everyday.
I commend you for appreciating her.

It all depends on the type of relationship you have with her. I think a Thank You card and a gift card for something she likes (food place, starbucks, etc.) would be nice. Not too over the top but I can bet she would appreciate it.

Flowers are only appropriate on Administrative Assistant day... otherwise I think its too personal.

Verbally is best...If you're looking to show it...definitely a nice card, and a token of appreciation, maybe flowers, a gift certificate for a restaurant or a massage. What about a raise? Is it that time yet? Sometimes words are the BEST way to say and more importantly SHOW that you really appreciate someone.
One thing that never failed when I was an AA was a day off, paid day off, or even half day off. How about an extended lunch?
Good Luck!! :)
Sorry you have so many rude, perverted, and sexually assuming answers...do you remember when sending flowers was not considered as "too much" ?? People have gotten so nasty and bizarre with their thoughts. When my boss got me flowers the LAST thing I thought was this is too much. This generation of idiots is really a shame. Do what's in your heart.

I would give her a gift showing how much you appreciate her work. If you can, a raise or a bonus would be great. Or let her take a long weekend paid. If those aren't options, how about getting her a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant or salon?

I wouldn't send flowers - that might give the wrong idea. Buying her a nice plant for her desk would be nice. Or, anything for her office/desk is a good idea - like a picture frame, candles, or some kind of artwork.

Obviously a cash bonus would be nice, but flowers and a thank you card or a gift card to a restaurant in the area with the thank you card would be cool. Don't get too personal, that's not cool. It also depends on your work environment - does she solely work for you or does she also report to others? That could be a factor. If she reports to others as well, a simple thank you card with a personal note telling her how much you rely on her would be acceptable, IMO. (You don't want to make waves with the others.) Same thing goes if there's other admins that report to you.

Gimmicks are great, but only if they come with raises - otherwise they're empty gestures. This is advice from a senior level admin for the past 10 years. Admins don't get paid all that well and because of that, money is the best way to show her you value her. In addition, just tell her from time to time - think of it as the professional version of telling your wife you love her. She knows, but you do it over and over again anyway. Believe me, it might make you feel uncomfortable to express yourself that way, but she's unlikely to reject such a high compliment.

But I guess the best answer of all is, what would she say if you asked her this question?

I would tell her how much you appreciate her efforts, a gift certificate to a local restaurant would be nice. I would keep it on a professional level and not go with flowers or showy acts that will draw attention to her from others in the office. My boss gave me a gift certificate to a local restaurant with a card one time. It was great! (afternoon off is good too if you can swing it)

Buy her a compass. Then give it to her as a gift with a card and let her know how this symbolizes her moral compass. Just a neat idea.

What I would like is a gift certificate to a favorite store or a monetary bonus or flowers. But anything you do make sure you give a card that expresses your appreciation, even if you have to write something on your own.

Just like you said it. Money never hurts. Try a raise or a bonus. -It's the professional way to show appreciation.

Try not to make the other office workers jealous...hence don't send flower. Try not to get too mushy or she'll think you're hitting on her.
