Don't fight it! Accomplish something!

If it persists, try counting your blessings in prayer

Sleep will usually 'come naturally' when you are properly tired. The problem many people run into, is we 'fight it' or stay up too late and become 'overtired'. This causes the body to work harder and that's why you might find yourself becoming hungry if you don't go to bed at the 'first' sign of tiredness.

The conditions of where you live can contribute to your not feeling like you can sleep as easy, as many parts of the world have lights and appliances that give off light (television, streetlights, etc). There is a natual tendency in the body to react to light (you may have had this happen when Sunlight hits your eyes through a window early in the morning). Some companies have entire walls of lights that help nightshift works 'trick' their body into thinking they are on proper daylight/night time.

If you have had a hard day of physical or mental exercise, you shouldn't need to 'help' your body fall asleep. It will be tired and as you slow down and relax, your body will simply fall asleep and have a good rest.

If you simply can't 'shut your brain off' or are trying to sleep after changing your hours (shiftwork, staying up too late, etc) there are some things you can do.

~Milk and a light snack can help 'satify your body' and allow your system to relax a bit - don't eat too much or anything too spicy as it can be a 'burden' on your body and keep you awake.
~Light, slower music, or repetative sounds (the ocean, wind, etc) can help you to calm down by distracting your mind and relaxing you
~A short amount of light exercise can help work out any stress or tension in the body. Walking or stretching for a while can help, as well as tire you out just a little more.
~Don't start anything that has a 'goal' - that means no washing dishes, doing chores, playing a game or watching TV. All of these things have a sort of 'end' that you may feel you 'have to get to'. Read a book that you are not close to finishing or listen to music that you can just leave playing - these things don't really have 'goals' and should relax you and keep you still, as well.
~Try to avoid sleeping pills of any kind. Even through only a few uses, it is possible for your body to adapt to the chemicals by no longer producing it's own (it desn't need it, does it?) and you will find you soon cannot sleep without them.

Good luck and try some searching of 'help sleeping', 'sleep help', 'falling asleep' and see what some other ideas you can find are. Good luck!

melatonin is the most effective non addictive solution I have found. It doesn't require a prescription, you can get it at a health food store. It is the actual chemical that your brain is supposed to emit at night to make you tired. When you are stressed, depressed, or a variety of other problems it doesn't get released. I have found that no matter what I am struggling with emotionally the melatonin helps me fall asleep fast and helps to restore my natural sleep patterns naturally. Most of the other sleep aids become habit forming and you can no longer fall asleep with out them so be careful what you decide to take.

First of all, go see the doctor. Certain systems of sickness's cause you to suffer from insomnia. Anything stressful, or exciting happening in your life, can cause insomnia. Different job, could be your eating habits, too much soda too late, new medication, or it could be your mattress or bed.
Look over your whole life, and your certain daily habits
before resorting too a sleep aid, which can cause a dependency on that drug. Please never mix any drug, over the counter or not, (herbal) with alcohol.
Good luck...nighty nighty.
