it is pretty dang close. They measure the circumferece of the baby's head, and also the length of the femer. From these measurements they can more precisely determine the true gestational age of the fetus, and a more accurate due date. If the Ultrasound dates are less than 7 days off from the conception/due dates you have already calculated with your doctor from looking at a calendar, they most likely won't change your due date on the charts. But if the dates are signifigantly different, the doc will change your Prenatal charts to represent what the ultrasound revealed.

The ultrasound always showed my daughter as bigger than what we thought her conceived date was. The doc always stuck to the date calculated by my last period. I kept telling him she was going to be early because the ultrasounds showed her bigger. He said she was just big. She was born 16 days early and in perfect health, so the ultrasound ended up being more accurate.

Sometimes when they measure the size of the baby they can determine how far a long you are then just go back to that date.
If (counting today) your ultrasounds shows the baby to be 12 weeks and 2 days the you got pregnant on April 18. Just take a calander and go back on the days, it would be somewhere within a couple of days!!!
Congrats!!!!!

It's best to use the first day of your last period as your date. Assuming you have sex once a week or so, say the first day of your last period was May 1. It was over May 7, then your husband and you had sex on May 10, 15 and 30. *More than likely* the day you conceived was May 15. Women generally ovulate half way through their menstrual cycle. If you're on a 28 day cycle, you'll probably ovulate from May 13 - 17, with the 15 being your most fertile day. This isn't always true though. I ovulate early in my cycle, apparently (I have two kids to prove it, lol).

It can get pretty close. Probably not down to the exact date, but they take measurements of the baby in the ultrasound and can get a date for you.

Ultrasound due date minus exactly 38 weeks=conception date (+/- 5days). (First trimester ultrasound is the most accurate dating sono).
Less accurate method -> First day of your last menstrual period (LMP) + 2 weeks.
