You water breaking refers to the amniotic sac that encloses your baby in the womb having a tear in it, thereby making the amniotic water leak out. It usually happens when the baby is ready to come out - it is one of the signs of prelabor.

When your baby's head drop down into the cervix, and with the contractions in the uterus trying to speed up the process, the amniotic sac breaks. The water leaks out from inside the cervix out to the vagina. You may notice it like a little trickle of water coming out. Sometimes it gets mistaken for urine, but the difference is in the color and smell. Urine smells like ammonia and is usually yellow or yellowish. Amniotic fluid has a pale straw-like color and smells sweet, not harsh. When you're lying down, it keeps coming out, but when you get up, sometimes it'll slow down the flow because the baby's head acts like a cork and stops the fluid from coming out the cervix. Urine doesn't constantly flows out, especially after the bladder has been emptied out.

When your water breaks, it is important to get medical help in a 24 hour period to avoid infection to the baby. That's because when the amniotic sac is broken, your baby's protective shield (which is the sac essentially) is now open as well, and the risk for an infection rises. Most doctors advise soon-to-be-moms to go to the hospital as soon as their water breaks. Discuss your options with your doctor to know his/her instructions for when your water breaks. Note though that some women do not experience their water bag breaking; it varies.

Goodluck!

When Your Water Breaks

It isn't necessarily a big gush all at once, so your mom may be wrong. For me, my doctor had to rupture my membranes, and even though I was expecting niagra falls down there, it was more like a water balloon. And my daughter's head was engaged a little, so she was blocking the rest from coming out all at once. Every time I changed position, coughed, or laughed, a little more would trickle out, and it felt nothing at all like peeing. It's totally involuntary. When you have to pee, the nerves in your bladder send a signal to your brain telling you so. There aren't any such nerves in your uterus, or else the whole 9 months you'd feel like you were gonna wet yourself, you know? So it doesn't feel like peeing, where you know if there's more that needs to come out or not. This is more like when you have your period and first thing in the morning when you sit up out of bed, sometimes you feel a little gush - it's that kind of feeling. If you are sure that you've been losing your mucous plug, then I would certainly at least call your doctor. It sounds to me like labor is starting for you! Congratulations mama!

"The baby is surrounded and protected by a sac of water called amniotic fluid from the beginning of pregnancy. The fluid cushions baby to keep him safe and protects him from infection.

When your water breaks, you may notice a popping sensation and either a gush or a trickle as some of the amniotic fluid leaks out through your vagina. The amniotic sac membranes have simply ruptured in preparation for the expulsion of the baby.

Once your water breaks, the fluid may continue to slowly leak until you deliver your baby. This happens because amniotic fluid primarily consists of fetal urine, which the baby continues to produce even after the amniotic sac has broken."

P.S. I was in labor for about six hours before my water broke, it happened in my hospital bed. So it can happen before or even during labor.

i have two kids. you "water" is the amniotic sac, which surrounds and protects your baby. this sac, is around the baby, inside the womb. contrary to popular belief, most womens water does not break before the get to the hospital. amniotic fluid if there are no complications is clear and looks just like water. your water breaking doesnt feel like anything other than a rush of warm water and less pressure in your womb. some babies are actually born with the amniotic sac intact, my doctor had seen this twice, and said other docs call it a pearl.

When you're about to deliver the amniotic sac ruptures and you begin to lose amniotic fluid. It's clear, with specks of white in it. I asked the same question when I was pregnant and everyone told me I would know when it happened, but I didn't. I was standing in the hall way and all of a sudden I felt this warm rush of fluid and I thought I peed on myself. I was so embarrassed and frustrated that I started to cry. I cleaned myself up, and went about my business, but it kept happening again and again. I wasn't having contractions so this went on for an hour before I finally decided I'd better call the doctor and try to figure out what was happening to me.

Well, it's when the bag of waters around the baby breaks..or the amniotic sac filled with amniotic fluid ruptures..whichever wording you prefer :-P

With my son I kept feeling little spirts of water throughout the night but was so tired and out of it I didn't really pay attention and kept falling back asleep. I woke up at around 5 am and was all wet. It didn't smell and it was clear. It obviously wasn't uncomfortable (the actual water breaking) because it didn't phase me.

That is different not just for every woman, but also for every pregnancy. I have had 2 children so far and the first time it happened when I was laying down, it wasn't a huge gush but I could tell that my water had broken. The second time it was just a trickle and it was pre-term.

I have heard of many women gushing all over the floor and stuff so it varies.

When your water breaks it basically means that the baby is ready to come. The baby is concealed in the womb and is surrounded by water. The womb gets thinner and thinner as it get closer to the baby being born. Once the womb/bag breaks all of the fluid comes out. It feels kinda of like you are "peeing" and you can't stop it.

It's when the amniotic fluid comes out when the membrane around the baby breaks open. I actually heard a popping noise when my water broke when I was pregnant. It feels like you wet yourself. It kind of smells like clean straw, according to my midwife.
