Well sure he is famous for his name how could it be any other way. JR does have a lot of talent however, I think we all saw last year that a driver is only one piece of the equation.The best driver can only do so much on his own
if he/she does not have a first rate crew chief,pit crew,and race team they are not going to win in today's super competitive Nascar series.I think Earnhart is a competent driver but I think his fame and his popularity have more to do with him picking up most of Dale SR'S fans after his tragic death in 2001.JR may be able to win a title or two if DEI can raise their game to the same level as say Hendricks,Rousch,or Joe Gibbs racing or if he bolts for one of these super teams on his own ,but I dont think he will ever have the record his dad compiled.

Dale Jr was in the sport before his father's death, and he had some fame then. Sure part of that was b/c he was an Earnhardt. He inherited a lot of fans after the tragic loss of his dad. Is he the greatest driver, well no, but he does hae the likability factor to a lot of people. People like him, and he's a good enough driver to get somewhere on his own skills.

I think Dale Jr would have made it without his dads help. If he was just riding on his dads shirt tails he wouldnt have the wins hes gotten. However having senior for a dad certainly helped his progress. Racing is in the blood and his dads ability to teach helped him out alot but once again, to win, you gotta be good. Dale Jr is good plain and simple

Dale Jr. is good but his dad got the earnhardt name started. Jr. is holding his own though.

Dale Jr. is a really good race car driver... yes he is famous b/c of his last name... but he has shown his talent this season by some of his finishes... he has shown that he can race and be more sucessful on more than just RP tracks...

He is good! If he wasn't good & he was just famous b/c of his name he wouldn't be in the cup series! Look at his brother! Kerry Earnhardt is STILL in the truck series. Jr. DOES have talent & has made a name for himself. He has 2 Busch championships & in time, he'll get a Nextel one. SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, NO HE'S NOT FAMOUS JUST B/C OF HIS NAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you look over his entire body of work thus far he's meidocre. Time will tell if the Dale Earnhardt Jr. legacy is marketing or winnig.

At first, he got opportunities because of this name. Certainly he isn't a bad driver as he had won the Busch Championship twice. In Cup, he was raised to a higher level in my opinion simply because of this name. He actually didn't like that himself and has attempted to establish his own identity. I think that as time goes by he will succeed at that and not live in id Dad's shadow.
