the different phases of the moon and sun are supposed to affect your horoscope. What day and year and time you were born and what was going on with the moon is how they figure out certain things about you, allegedly.

Well actually, SUN and MOON have to do a lot with horoscope. Sun is your soul and moon is your mind. Going mathematically, you can prepare a person's horocope with the help of Sun-rise and sun's position on that person's birth day. If you dont have any details about a person and you just have to horoscope of that person you can tell exactly his/her Date of birth with the help of Sun and moon's position in the horoscope.

I'll give you an example of Sun's importance in creating horoscope : (remember you have to remember a lot and do lots of calculations). You need 3 things D.O.B, birth time and place.

For example : 29 aug 1980, 10:20 am, rajkot, gujarat, india.

Now, get the sun-rise time of the above date (29-aug-80), and find in which zodiac sun was present on that day (it was in LEO).
and sun rise time was 6:30. Now, earth takes 24 hours to complete a day and there r 12 zodiacs so, 24 divided by 12 is 2. So, add 2 hours to 6:30, it makes 8:30, 10:20 doesnt fall into that time line, so again add 2 hours into 8:30 it makes 10:30. Now leo is 5th sign of zodiacs , so 5 + 2 (2 hrs added 2 times) = 7. Libra is the 7th sign. So, the ascendant is Libra and just start putting zodiacs that are in line. this is how a horoscope is prepared. this is just an inklikg, you might not understand well.

But anyways, I've showed the importance of SUN in preparing horoscopes. Hope, you like the details i've provided. All the details i've provided are of Ancient Indian Vedic Astrology.

No, your horoscope has to do with planets not stars. Being an Aries means that the sun was traveling through the sign of Aries when you were born. The stars are just the constellations that the planets travel through.

Aries are compatible with (in this order) Libra, then Leo or Sagittarius, and then Gemini or Aquarius.

when you do your birth chart you can have the sun rising in a certain sign and a moon rising in a certain sign. E.g. Im Taurus the bull and i think that at the time of my birth the sun was rising in taurus so im very taurus, my friend whos a year older (and a few days) is taurus yet when he was born the sun was rising in gemini so i say to him he has a gemini side. Im not an expert but its just how i think of it.
