the holes are about an inch in diameter. It is def not a dog. Happens only at night. Looks as if the grass what ripped up and something dug the hole

You have skunks. They are nocturnal, and love the
large white grubs just below the surface. Thats where
the holes come from, the skunk digging for grubs.

On a soccer field, there is a machine that puts holes in the field. They call it airating the field. It is like giving the dirt air!

Skunks digging up grubs. Spray your yard with pestiside. Check at your garden center for the best one.
