Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. The problem with teen "goths" is that they probably have not have enough experiences and a rational point of view to understand things the way that real goths do. For an even longer explanation, go to www.goth.net/goth . And lastly, most goths are Christians, agnostics, or atheists, not Satanists.

I am 44 yrs. old and am not, never have been and never will be a "goth". I do however, have 2 adult children who are "goth" and have been ever since I can remember. They just started dressing that way and wearing the makeup and listening to that music all on their own. I never discouraged it. I saw nothing wrong with it as they weren't preoccupied with death or anything occult that seemed to be harmful from my perspective. I actually encouraged them to "do their own thing and be their own person", They are all grown up now and some people call them "freaks", but they just ignore them and understand that those people are just afraid of something that is "not normal" to them. I have a son who wears black eyeliner and has piercings in places I probably don't even know about. My daughter wears nothing but black and dies her hair black and has piercings I probably don't want to know about. Just because they dress the way they do doesn't mean I love them any less. They're my kids and they mean the world to me . I'll back them up no matter what.

It is not something learned. It is a style, just like some men like to wear their pants under their butts. Just like some girls like to part their hair down the middle. Well, then some people prefer to wera black clothes and listent o goth music instead of rap or rock. It is not something bizarre, it is a style, a taste in clothing and music.

It's a style. Everyone makes it sound like a culture, or a philosophy. It's people who wear black, love dark makeup, hate god, and basically scare little old people, and little children.
