Lots of options:
1) The easiest is to buy a hub, switch, or router (the router would be overkill unless you plan on using it with your high-speed connection). You then connect both PC's over ethernet to the router, which of course requires an ethernet port. If the old desktop doesn't have one, you can find cheap PCI cards online at:
http://www.pricewatch.com
- Once connected, both workstations will have to belong to the same workgroup name so that they can see each other. Simply share the folders/files you want to copy from the desktop, move them to the laptop's hard drive, then burn 'em. The following sites might help in providing more details:

http://www.wown.com
2) Buy a cheap DVD burner for your old desktop. You should be able to find one online for less than $50 (non-retail). You might end up spending close to that anyway buying the hub/router and cables from the previous suggestion. A good site to buy from is www.newegg.com
3) You could also connect both PC's using a crossover ethernet cable bypassing the need for a hub, switch, or router. However, you might find that speeds are a little slower, and it may be a bit more difficult to setup at first. The sites mentioned in 1) should help you out here.
Good Luck!

use a crossover cable and netbui. Or hard code each machine 192.168.100.1 and 2 with subnet 255.255.255.0 and no gateway. Go to "my computer" and right click the drive you want to transfer from and set it to share. Go to the laptop and look in "network neighborhood" and you should see the other pc. Make sure it has the same workgroup name. Been a while but netbui doesnt need alot of setup as it is a non-routable protocol.
2. Got a digital camera? Upload your files to your digital camera and move them over to your laptop. Your camera will show up as another hard drive when you plug it in, then just copy the files to that drive, assuming the memory is sufficiant in the camera.

easiest way is: if you have a router, your laptop and desktop are somehow already connected altho you have to configure some things, just try to run the networking wizard and you'll know what to do from there.

get a datalink cable (USB) from any PC store... newer operating systems actually have data file transfer wizards to help you switch between PCs...
If you have a home network you can always link both up and share the files between them you want to transfer
