I have had knee surgery twice, knee surgery is very painful , your knee and possibly leg will be very swollen and stay that way for awhile perhaps months..or longer ..the best thing you can do is start therapy as soon as possible.. and exercise your knee after that every chance you get... you can start to walk on it fairly soon though it will hurt to do so at first.. and total recovery can take a few months or longer depending on how active you were before and are after.. the swelling may last longer though.. and even re-occur at times... I wish you a safe operation and speedy recovery!!!!!!

The pain differs for everyone. Some patients that I have worked with have not had much pain at all and some have had a lot of pain. It will also depend on the day. Depending on your doctor, and what they do to the meniscus, you could be walking the next day (with crutches) or it could be 6 weeks before you walk. If they repair the meniscus - which is theoretically better for your knee in the long run, however there are drawbacks, and many surgeons don't do it - you should stay off of it completely for about 6 weeks. If they remove the injured part of the meniscus, most of the time they want you to start walking as soon as possible, with the help of crutches until you can walk normally.
Around 6-8 weeks, your knee will be feeling really good. However, it is not healed and you should NOT try to do anything that your doctor has not cleared you to do. The actual healing time can be 12-18 months, however most people are cleared for all activities by 6-8 months.

I had this same exact surgery only they took my new ACL from the calf. I was kept awake during the operation, under heavy sedation and they knocked out all the feeling from my waist down. It worked really well, no grogginess or sore dry throat from a tube. I got home the same day of the surgery and the medication they give you before you leave lasts for a few hours then it wears off and it hurts until you take your prescription meds. I was in crutches and a brace for a few months before I could really walk on it, all in total the rehab for me was around 5-6 months. My knee is 100% now. Good luck, it's definitely going to be tough and a challenge you'll always remember.
One more thing, these people are saying 6-8 weeks which is BS. When you're dealing with a complete ACL repair and Meniscus, your recovery is going to be much more then 6-8 weeks. My recovery was faster then normal. It takes many months. I had my surgery in February of 2003 and I wasn't 100% until mid to late summer of that year.

OUCH!!! Sounds painful already! Average healing time from ACL surgery is 6 -8 weeks. You'll start some exercises soon after surgery, but you probably won't be walking on that leg for about a month. It will probably be somewhat painful, but your orthopedic surgeon will give you a prescription for pain medication after your surgery, and you'll be icing that knee while you're still in the recovery room. If the meniscus is repaired, it will heal in the same amount of time as the ACL graft.

i had this done 2 times...it's not all that bad. they had me on a continues motion machines for the first few days, and i was in the hospital overnight on a "pain pump" to help with the pain the first night. they have u up on crutches quickly and in physical therapy immediately after also. be patient and do the therapy, it helps better than anything. i had to have a donor lig. because of other knee problems too, so the grafting is different for u!
it took a couple of weeks to walk without the crutches, but had to have an acl brace for a year or so. don't worry...it's not that bad, and feels so much better once it's healed!
take care!!!
p.s...don't watch the medical channels to find the surgery. that scared me to death b4 my surgery!!!

I didn't have this EXACT surgary done, but I did have similar. I was up and walking again in less than a month, but the Doctor said that I healed much faster than anticipated. By your description, I would guess that you would need a bit longer..maybe 6-8 weeks. The pain is tolerable, don't worry too much about that

took me about two week to get pressure back on the knee enough to walk. It odes not hurt that much if the hook you up the the bender after surgery. It is a device that supports your knee and bends it so not as much fluid builds up.

I used to work in physical therapy. You will begin to bear weight within 24 hrs. w/ the use of crutches. It will hurt, but pain will decrease with activity. Don't get lazy after surgery. Be sure you do your exercises at home. (they will give them to you at physical therapy.) All the patients I helped take care of weren't in pain at all by the time of outpatient therapy, which is about 3-5 days.
