I think that too few school systems have or have implemented the necessary curriculum for ESL students to fully reach their potential. Depending on the native language of the individual, school resources and prior knowledge language acquisition can vary from extremeley difficult to somewhat easy. I think that different techniques also work. Immersion in a general education is generally the only option for some students unfortunately. I think a combination of both ESL classes and immersion when appropriate are best. Pulling out of the classroom at designated times as well seems to help some. The process itself of language acquisition is easier for younger children than adults. A lot of adults learn what they know from their children when they come home from school. Socialization is also a major part of language acquisition. Allowing a language learner to socialize, even though they may not know what the Native language speaker is saying can help with language acquisition.

Good question. My experience with ESL is as a long term substitute teacher in New Mexico. It is a significant help when properly implemented. It does need to be limited to a specific time period, three years seems to be most effective from my discussions with the teachers involved. I have seen programs that grossly abuse the system but they are few today. I did see one program that allowed students to spend their entire education Yrs 1-12 in ESL and that was a disaster. But in general ESL is very helpful in assimilating foreign language speakers into our education system.

I think if you are going to live in this country you should learn the language primarily spoken by the citizens (English). I think it is a great idea that schools teach English to non-native speakers.
