There are so many answers to this question. I think that number one is what is the purpose of making your film? If it is for fun then you are probably looking at buying something which is within a reasonable budget.

That is essentially the second question.
What is your budget? How much will you be comfortable with spending.

There are many fine books which will answer all your questions, but I am not sure if I am allowed to name any of them on the answers section of this site.

I will take the chance:)

The Guerilla Film Makers Handbooks is good, as is their Movie Blue Print. They will give you an idea of what the whole process entails, and may have answers to many of your questions. They can weigh in quite heavily price wise, but should be worth the price.

Also Extreme DV at used car prices. I am a big fan of keeping that budget as low as possible. In fact if you can beg borrow (but not steal the equipment) even better.

Get involved in a film making group in your area, there is sure to be one. This will be the other thing you will learn about making indie film. You will need to use charm and tact and enthusiasm to get what you want.

Write your script about places that you have access to. Make it something that can be performed by people with little acting skill, so that they shine rather than looking awkward.

Essentially, and this is a big one...feed them. If your cast and crew are giving their time up, make sure that although you are business like there is an element of fun to it as well.

Good luck:)
