The most common cause is because your pc's integrated video uses 16Mb, 32Mb, 64Mb or more of your RAM, and the amount used by your video is substracted from the 256Mb.

For instance, if your video uses 16Mb, then your memory count will show 240Mb, if it uses 32Mb it will show 224, and so on.

This is not really a problem. Check the BIOS configuration for the video settings. Then you can check how much memory is being reserved for your integrated video card.

If you want to increase the performance o your pc, you can install an agp video card (or PCI), and it will release the used memory, and the bus usage.

You may have integrated graphics on your motherboard that is designed to use a portion of the 256 MB of RAM that you have on your machine. If you do not see 256 MB of RAM when you Right Click and select Properties on My Computer, then this may be the case. If you see 240 MB instead of 256 MB then it means your integrated graphics is using 16 MB of your system memory for its own use.

You can verify this setting or change it to use more or less system RAM sometimes by going to the BIOS and making the appropriate changes.

If this isn't the case, then one other possibility is that your memory wasn't installed correctly or is not compatible with your system and your computer isn't registering all of 256 MB of RAM.

There are a couple reasons for this 256, 512 ect. are just basic numbers to make it easier to understand. Depending on your set up it may say something like 236 or if it's a bit above 262 as an example. Now if you integrated ram that is completely different because it's splitting the device between more than 1 application.

i opt to propose taking the 256 MB Stick out thoroughly its unlikely to make lots distinction in overall performance with the a million GB stick put in. place the 1GB Stick the place the 256 MB stick became. additionally confirm the motherboard reminiscence ability is for 1GB for each slot. That board might in user-friendly terms take 512MB max consistent with slot. you have 2 diverse kind reminiscence sticks, often times the moboard dosen't like that and reject the hot stick. that's by way of a mismatch in CAS Latency and the Timings. If that fixes the difficulty i might get a 2d a million GB Stick of an identical kind for the different slot for twin Channel which will double your reminiscence archives circulate effectively.

I am not sure of this but i presume the difference of memory space that shows in ur system info (eg : 256MB,it shows @%2MB,diff=256-252=4MB) is actually the space reserved for VIRTUAL MEMORY of ur comp!! I wont be able to explain virtual memory so easily, but in a nutshell it is actually a space in RAM,which the computer uses in such a way,so that the available memory seems to be larger to the comp than it really is!!

Hi

It shows less RAM because some part of the RAM is used for Display adpter (display card). There are display cards that come with 64MB/128B etc but the generic cards use some memoory from RAM to process the information and show it on screen.

Thanks

There are actually 1044 bytes in IKB of RAM, 1044 KBytes in 1 MB of RAM.
The amount of RAM listed on the RAM itself may be more than there actually is.
Also: Your system heap may be subtracted from the amount of RAM you have.
