I was a teenager once. At that age it feels like you are going to explode if you don't have a way to relieve pressure built up in that area. It is intense and debilitating if he is not given a way to relieve this tension.
If he isn't given this path of relief, he will relieve it with a girl in high school or a hooker on the street.
Tell him about discretion and punish him for the lack of that. If you punish him for trying to relieve his tension or the use of porno, this is a request for him to take it to a hooker or a teenage girl. Then the trouble can really begin.

At 17, masturbation is normal...VERY normal. He is at his sexual peak right now. As for the porn, even though it's illegal, darn near every 17 y/o boy looks at porn. I would be concerned about:
#1--Is he developing an addiction to pornography?
#2--Is he having sex? Then it's a matter of picking and choosing your battles. If masturbating to a little porn is as far as he's going, then I wouldn't press the issue too far.

Masturbation is normal for anyone. I would tao him about sex addictions and let him know if it is getting to that point you will be there for him and get him help, but chances are he does not have a problem and he should not be punished. Talk to him about locking the door when he does it or maybe you should knock first. You should be glad he is not out having sex with a bunch of different girls.

If you punish your son for masturbating you will be teaching him that it's wrong, and it's not. Don't make your son ashamed of himself for something ALL men do or have done in their lives.
Learn to give your son some privacy..walking in on him "many times" is awful, you think you would have learned the first time you walked in on him! KNOCK! Both of you will sleep better at night!

I'd be more worried if he wasn't. Why do you keep walking in on him, don't you knock first. Your son is fine, and why should he be punished for something that I'm sure you did when you were his age. He is just a guy having a good time. Would you rather walk in on him with someone else in his bed?

Masturbation is not a punishable offence. You may want to talk to him about the fact that you don't appreciate porn on the computer. I'd rather see my son masturbating than having sex and get a girl pregnant

The masturbation is normal for teens, young adults and even some adults! It's healthy - don't worry about that.
The porn is another story. Pornography can give men the wrong ideas about sex and women. It can lead to poor treatment of women as well. I would try to get him away from that because it can lead to addiction and a negative attitude towards women and sex.

No. Masturbating is okay. It's normal. Especially for young men. I think you should talk to him about the porn issue, but not the masturbating issue.

Come on, are you serious? Just because you might not do it doesn't mean 8 out of ten guys might not, I mean, let's be realistic here. What are you going to do, lock him in his room? Make sure the shower towels are locked up. No, but really, quit walking in on him, he'll think you want to see his size. (I'm assuming you walked in on him; if not, sorry)
