I have been on many many cruises on several different cruise lines and ships. Here's what to expect.

What’s a Cruise Like

Once you are on ship the staff caters to you, its whatever you want. There is something to do all day every day. Some ships have morning exercise programs, stretching and walking or you can pay for other things like Spinning in the gym. All cruise ships have gyms so you can go workout usually any time from 6:00 AM to late at night. There is usually a walking/running track on one of the decks also. Some ships leave the gym open all night. They call the gyms Spa because they do promote getting pampering thuff like wraps and massages with aromatherapy. They will also generally have abeauty salon to do hair and nails..

Ships have movie theaters, small but nice, and you can also see movies in your room. There are demonstrations on ship like ice carving, napkin folding and towel folding, cooking demonstrations.

Each day you will receive a "newsletter" listing the time, place and particulars of each event. You can schedule land tours and activities also during the day and evening when the ship is in port. There are generally shows every evening, one show for those with an early dinner seating and another (same show) for those who eat late. There is always food available. Usually there is a place in ship where you can go get something. Or, you can always just pick up the phone in your cabin and order from the room serviice menu (food is free). If you want, you can order breakfast room service.

There are places on ships to play board games and cocktail lounges that feature a variety of mucis. There is usually a disco that starts after 10:00 PM each night.

Then there is always the pools. Some ships have more than one and the newer ships generally have an indoor pool as well as outdoor ones and all of these have hot hots.

I suggest that you go to the web site for the cruise line you are going on and look at the features for the ship you will be on. I hope you have picked a balcony cabin, or a suite, they are more relaxing and fun.

WHAT TO TAKE

You will need a passport if your cruise ends after December 31, 2006, to get back into the US. Best thing to do is get one now and you will be good for 10 years.

Passports are issued by the US Department of State. But you can get the application at your local post office. If not, just go online to the passport office web site below. You will need two small photos to go with your application and you can usually get those at a AAA office, some travel agencies do them and other places advertize passport photos. You can take your application to the post office or mail it to the passport office. If you need the passport in a hurry, you can request expedited service and pay extra for the express mailings. The normal processing time for expedited service is at least two weeks; otherwise it takes 4 to 6 weeks.

You need to take beach wear for every day, some days will be on ship and others on tours or beaches. Take clothes to wear to/in the gym if you plan to workout on ship. You need to take dressup clothes for two (2) formal nights. You need to take "sports casual" wear,i.e., long pants, shirts with collars, etc for wearing to the dining room each day (you cannot wear swim wear or shorts in certain areas like the dining rooms, show room, bars and lounges, casino, after 6:00 PM each day). Take the same toiletries you would take on any vacation, but be sure you have plenty of sun screen.

You will need a credit card to setup your onboard credit account; or take enoght money to pay your bill in cash after the cruise.
The hidden costs on a cruise are your tab for drinks (alcoholic and sodas),tours, and gratuity. Many ships now add the recommended gratuity to your onboard tab. The gratuity is about $10 to $12 a day per person. You can give more if you want. Tours can add hundreds to your final bill, depending upon how many stop the ship makes and what you want to do. Study the tours carefully; some places you may want to just go on your own.

Visit the web site for the cruise you are taking and look at all of the information about your cruise.

all you really need is a bathing suit and casual clothing for most of your days. depending on how long your cruise is, you will have 1 or 2 formal dinners, that is if you eat in the formal dining room. they have other places to eat as well. they expect semi formal wearon the captains night. for the rest of the evenings in the dining room casual, resort type wear is acceptable. i have even worn jean skirts and tank tops. just pack as if you were going on a vaction to the beach and bring a couple of nice things for the formal nights. i am about to embark on my third cruise in two years and i have never worn half of what i have taken. the weather is usually very hot. atleast when i went to the western caribbean. for the most part you will get by with casual wear. they have something for everyone.

What should I pack?
Pack like you would for any resort. Cruise vacations are casual by day, whether you're on the ship or ashore. In the evening, ships vary as to dress. As on shore, attire is dictated by occasion. For the Captain's Gala, for example, you'll probably want to wear something more formal, such as a dark suit, or cocktail dress; perhaps even a dinner jacket or gown.

Will I need a tuxedo?
On some cruises, formal dinners or parties are part of the fun. But don't buy a tuxedo just for the trip. If you do want to dress to the nines, many ships offer tuxedo rental services. Even on the most formal of ships, a dark suit and tie are fine for the dressiest occasions.

I went on my first cruise last year, in the eastern Caribbean, Aruba area. and you really don't need a lot. some nicer cloth's for dinner. but you could get a way with tank tops and shorts. for most of it. my wife burns easy and wore a lot of capree's and short shirts (tee shirts). we did not swim much because our ship was crowded. but there was plenty of space to lay out during the day. really its up to you, as its your cruise, and unless your trying to impress some one, no one really Care's. everyone is just trying to have fun. the weather in the Caribbean does not really change that much, maybe 10 degrees either way, but it is a lot hotter not matter because it is so close to the equator. just take a little of both, i saw a man and woman wearing jeans for dinner one night in the ballroom, and no one cared, or said any thing, just be your self and have fun.

Well, when are you leaving? If you plan on going this summer, bring shorts and light pants. Mostly just casual stuff that isnt too hot. Make sure to bring a few "not so casual" clothes, for when your ship serves fancy dinner which required fancy dress. Of course, remember to ring a bathing suit!
