Because financial wealth does not connect with good personality. The two are independent of each other.

Maybe they didn't change, maybe it's you! The more money people get the more others have their hand out because they think they owe them something! Say someone wins the lottery all their friends and family call them to see if they can get some of the winnings, and when the winner says no it's suddenly a problem. People fail to realize that they aren't the only ones asking the winner for money and the winner is suddenly backed into a corner, and forced to make the decision to go broke and help the people or get labeled as a**holes to the people he denies.

People are a very fickle thing. Being rich or becoming rich moves you up into certain elite groups and it gives you certain priviledges and access to a different way of living. However attitudes and behavior can change along with new surroundings. I think because of this people become catty, look down on you and become disdainful. I think most of the time when they see lower class and middle class people they're just afraid to become like that again so they try to rid themselves of that...influence or possibly reminder of where they once were. Money can do bad things to people and sometimes good. Not all rich people are a$$holes. Bear that in mind.

Because most of them get caught up in themselves. Selfishness prevails. Regardless of what some may think, money can buy you freedom and good health, with that, you can achieve more than a poor man. Many of them become spoiled and believe that there is a price for everything and they won't stop until they get their way, no matter how many people they have to hurt to get what they want.

For the most part, it is not really how much money they have that makes them jerks. It is really based on how they were raised. If they are raised to respect everyone, they will always respect everyone no matter what tax bracket they are in. I blame the parents. If the parents are jerks, the children will be also. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

In many ways the attainment of wealth usualy requires you to "step" up the ladder on the backs of others, a process that is more distasteful the less of an a***hole you are. Also, most apparent a***holes are usually pretty insecure and insecurity is probably the main motivation for attainment of wealth.

In other words it would make sense if most, and not all, of the more wealthy people around will be both selfish and insecure, ergo 4x4's and leylandii ;)

Some people are just a**holes to begin with. I always tell my children work for what you want and pray for what you need. There has to be a certain amount of struggle(work) to become rich or you don't appreciate it. The struggle makes you a better person if you can remember the lesson. It also makes you humble.Being humble helps you put yourself in other peoples shoes. It also allows you to remember the golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. A lot of us have forgotten this.

Oh, geez, there are so many answers, and I think it would depend on the individual person. But here are some of my thoughts...

First, a rich person can easily get into the habit of thinking that each person he or she encounters is after his or her money.

Also, rich people develop a sense of personal entitlement as a result of being surrounded by simpering and obsequious yes-men all the time.

Being pampered and catered to hand and foot, with every whim satisfied almost immediately, is bound to erode whatever humility a person might naturally feel.

A rich person is able to afford all the nicest clothes, and has access to finest medical care, food, and just about everything else, and will congregate with other wealthy people. Well, these little groups of millionaires and billionaires become echo chambers, as they complain ceaselessly back and forth about the legions of unwashed masses of filthy poor humanity that are trying to part them from their vast personal fortunes, and this contributes to an us-versus-them mentality.

In the worst cases, you get people like Leona Helmsly and Jeffrey Skilling, people who believe that their wealth puts them above the law, and that the only moral imperative that exists is expansion of their own personal fortunes, regardless of the legal or societal consequences.

Some people act nicely towards others because they believe this other person may come in handy at one point or another and it would be against their interests to jeopardize that. However as they become more and more financially secure the pool of people that can be of help to them become smaller and smaller, since these people can no longer be of service to them they feel free to act as they feel towards them. It is not the money that makes them what you describe but the fact you become more and more disposable to them.

There are two ways of looking at this.

1. People who are born into wealth.
2. People who acquire their wealth.

Those who are born into money don't really know any better. They are who they are, and you have to make allowances for them.

However, people who come into this world with nothing and acquire their wealth are the worst as they often lose track of reality. They become incredibly selfish and horrible and look down on people who are where they used to be and treat them with total contempt.

These are the arseholes, not those who are born into wealth. The more money they get the more money they want. They become greedier and greedier and they don't care what they do to obtain more money or who they hurt to acquire it.

That is stereotyping. There are many rich people who give back to their former communities. Some give very hefty sums to charities, and some adopt orphaned children.

Celebrities of all types (sports, TV, movies, politics, big business, lottery winners, megabucks winners) are just like everyone else--with varying personalities, likes and dislikes. One thing that most of them probably share is the lack of privacy allowed them.
