When the mare starts to foal you should call a vet. Make sure two front feet and a head come out first. If not and you are not experienced you definitly should call a vet. once foal is completely out you need to clean its nose out. dry them off with a towel. giving them an enema helps them pass their first feces. Once mare stands up and the cord breaks on its own dip the navel in mild iodine. tie up mares placenta so she doesn't step on it. foal should stand on its own within an hour and nurse within three. if not you need to get atleast eight onces of milk from the mare and feed it to the foal through a bottle. if you want to do more you can get a colostormeter to check the level of your mares colostrum to make sure it is good enough. Also the mare should pass her placenta within three hours too to avoid infection in the mare.

You can help the mare clean up and dip the umbical stump in tamed iodine to clean it.
Make sure the foal stands and nurses with a few hours.
If your mare is in active labor and you do nt see two feet first call your vet at once.
You should have your vet on speed dial just in case.
After she has the foal if the mare stands up right away tie the placenta in a knot so she does not step on it. You will want to keep a bucket handy and put it in the bucket so the vet can check it to make sure she delivered all of it as if not she could get a uterine infection.
Past that enjoy your new baby. They are so much fun ots of work but I love to spend time watching them.

you need to make sure that she delivers in a safe place away from other horses and people. when the foal arrives if the delivery goes right there normally is not a whole lot to do. Just supervise everything and maybe have a vet come and a vet's number handy. remember horses deliver on their own so it shouldn't be a big worry.

Make sure a vet is somewhere close when she is ready to foal. Vets would know more what to do than anyone. Make sure you have an emergency number for that person. That way, since it's your first time, you can learn something from this experience and be better equipped next time.

Honestly, you should help the mother clean it with a damp washcloth. It will bond with you AND the mother. However, let the mare take the lead. She knows exactly what needs to be done. Just provide clean straw and plenty of food and water for the mare.

It would be best to have a vet there. but just make sure to keep her in an enclosed stall to herself with plenty of clean bedding and fresh water. and try not to interfere too much when the time comes or it could disturb her and she may end up hurting herself.

you need to be asking an equine vet this question. it is a natural process, but complications can occur and you need a vet specializing in horse care on call for the birth incase of problems.
