1st of all, examine the friendship and ask yourself if you are willing to loose what you have. If he doesn't feel the same way (romantically), he may look at you differently and I'm not talking about the way you want him too. However if he is a true friend...he'll let you know easy and still be able to maintain the relationship you have now, although this may cause you to shy away due to rejection. But then on the other hand he may share the feelings and that could make for a very strong relationship.
I think though that you would be able to tell if the feelings were mutual.

Try talkingabout all you've been through and ask "What do u think it would be like if we went out?" or... you can write a letter telling how u feel

you can do what all the really mature kids do and have your friend tell him for you. Then she can find out if he likes you back.

i say you tell him you have a crush on someone and ask for advise then he tells you the advise then ask him on a date
