I am 36 almost 37 weeks pregnant and my baby decided to turn into a breech or transverse position. I am going into have an external version on MOnday and wanted to know if anyone has had the procedure. I am also bummed becuase up until this point I have had a midwife and I am now worried that I won't have her. I was also wondering of personal sucess rates of this procedure. This is my first child and I have not had any complecations.

I have never had an external version, but I have carried a breech baby (she was transverse) and was able to turn her without having the doctor intervene. Go to spinningbabies.com for tips on how to turn your own baby; maybe when you get to your appointment it will no longer be necessary.

When my baby was breech, I was also almost 37 weeks pregnant. As often as I could spare a few minutes, I got into this position: get on your hands and knees, then lean forward so your elbows are on the floor. Your back should be slanted with your butt in the air. I did it several times a day for a week. At my next appointment my baby was head-down. There are other positions you can do but this one was the most comfortable for me.

Edited to say to the person who posted before me, it is not as simple as just "turning a baby to head first." People I know who have done the procedure say it hurts very badly; it also increases the need for a c-section because of all the stress they are putting on the baby.

You can also see a chiropractor/acupuncturist about giving you a treatment for turning the baby. My chiro was scheduled to do it for me (It was a $40 appointment, not too bad) but the baby turned before the appointment so I cancelled it.

Good luck!

Thankfully, both of my boys were head down when they were born. They did devote nearly an entire hour during my childbirth education class to external versions. If I remember correctly (this was 2.5 years ago!) they're fairly common. The drawback are that a) they can be *incredibly* uncomfortable (painful in some cases); b) a lot of the time, the baby flips right back around into the position it was in before being turned; and c) there's a small chance that the baby can be hurt if the ob/gyn is inexperienced.

You still have 3 weeks left...who's doing the version...your midwife or an ob/gyn? Why aren't they willing to wait another week or so? Your baby has plenty of time to turn.

I got lucky in a way. My first son was breech until 37 weeks. They were giving up on him and one night, no lie, I ate taco bell (pregnant womans best friend :) and in just 4 hours the kid did a full turn on his own. It was so painful, he literally bruised my belly it was so bad. The next day the midwife couldn't believe it how bad my stomach looked, but there he was, head down.

the same thing happened to me at 37 weeks. i figured i'd let mother take her course. thankfully, my daughter turned on her own at 39 weeks!!! however, after 15 hours of labor and only 2 centimeters, i ended up with a c-section anyway because she was in such fetal distress, but she was fine!!! good luck---be safe & have a healthy baby.

I've never had that. Sorry. Good luck though. Don't let other people downplay your anxiety. You have a right to be nervous. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
