Chandler apparently didn't have very good swimmers. Monica's uterus was said to be a "hostile environment". Given that the two each has reproductory problems they could not conceive a chld and adopted.

Because chandler's sperms don't swim too well and Monica's uterus produces a hostile environment for the sperms that come in, that's what the doctor told Chandler over the phone. Because of this, that's why they decided to adopt a baby.

There was something wrong with Chandler. I forget what was wrong with him but it interfered with his sex life and how well he performed in order to have a baby, sorry if I'm sounding gross. That's why they had to have someone to have a baby for them, because they couldn't have a baby themselves. It's sad.
