The question was tongue and cheek, it's amazing how many negative comments there are, me personally put it down to the British press, they state something bad about the french and most people are prepared to believe, the french people I do not have a problem, France for me, well that's a different story..

such a lot of hate from the above answers, just remember when you put a frenchman or woman down you could be related to them they could be a family member, after all going back over a thousand years we were mixed with them so many would be blood relations,it wasnt until henry the third that the royal family spoke english, french was the most spoken language in the land,so before you rant on think twice.

Bad Billy: only after the Germans had first...

Think the French still miffed that French stopped being the international language of diplomacy, culture, science et al. The only thing left is Par Avion on the airmail stickers....and bits like et al, etc, cul de sac ..bored myself now

You will find that more French people speak English well than you would think. They learn English from a very early age and a vast number of them are fluent in it.

They make a lot more effort with it than we Brits do to learn French, IMHO.

Have you seen "Cops"? Not everyone that speaks english is clever. In fact most are not.

If you're so clever, why don't you speak french?

If this is a serious question, then you're incredibly ignorant.

i live in the middle of france. lots of people around here speak english when they have to, but as they are in france they chose to speak french. i notice yer profile says you can't work because of the system but you don't actually say why... i work here and found a job quite easily, the sytem actually helped me. maybe its your attitude that makes people not want to help you.

Because French is the language they grew up speaking. For those of us who grew up speaking English, switching to French would be boring. Who needs another language? Sure it would be helpful in some situations but why would you bother.

Why would you like to oblige all the French to speak your language ?
Are the Americans fluent in foreign languages ?
