I've just spoken to my father, Horace Dungle, who fought in WWII, and he said that depends what you mean by helmet. He says they wore the standard issue flying helmet and goggles. You can see a picture here.

He remembers being on a US ship when the planes attacked and 10 seconds before the plane stuck he could see the pilot and he just had a normal flying helmet on with a white band around his head. Luckily the damage was only minor.
My father was in the British army and he was being transported by our good US allies on a special mission, that's why he was on a US ship.

Yes. Why? Because they need to successfully complete their suicidal mission as appointed by their leader. They wear the helmet in case an accident happens before they complete the designated task. The helmet will somewhat protect them during an accident that may be less severe. Then, if he is okay, not badly injured, he can go back up and complete his suicidal mission. With the helmet on again of course.

It was part of their uniform ... the kamikaze pilots did wear helmets. The helmets were also protection in case anything happened en route to their target. That way, the pilot would have a better chance of survival before killing himself and destroying his target simultaneously (sounds weird that he would want the most protection before he killed himself).

Yes they did wear helmets; The so called attack was undertaken in the last instance of an engagemnet with the enemy. i.e. if yer all out of bullets and yer not too hopefull of surviving anyway then go for it. Although pilots were trained to do so, ye can bet yer life most hoped to return.

yes they wore helmets if u can call them that it was just a leather hat not like today's helmets they didn't need oxygen like today's pilots because they couldn't clime high enough to need it and if they did need oxygen so would their plane because it would stall but the reason they wore these so called helmet was because their radios were in the ear flaps and they needed to hear to stay in formation

Yes they did. Honestly have no idea why, but it's my understanding that most of them weren't volunteers and in many cases the cockpit of their planes were welded shut (and obviously they were only given enough fuel for the outward journey)

If they do, I think it is so they can reach their final destination without getting shot in the head on the way.
