The cheapest rent I can find is $750 for a SMALL one bedroom apartment. When I look at the rent in Buffalo I see 3 bedroom homes for $375month. I want to move up to Buffalo for college due to rent issues etc... however my family says Buffalo may be dangerous and undeveloped is that the reason for the cheap rent?

Also how is job market in Buffalo?

And does Buffalo have a good public transportation system?

Is buffalo just like anywhere else in the US?

You will be shocked and amused at the difference in the cost of living between Southern California and Buffalo, NY! It's far cheaper to live there than many places.

It's a good place for school though. You have to be smart careful and not place yourself into a situation that is dangerous, i.e. wandering the streets late at night alone, being aware of what parts you are safe and where you would not be safe.

There's crime there as there is anywhere. College housing is notorious for robberies. If you go with off-campus housing, make sure it's above ground/1st floor level so as to make it harder for someone to just break in, etc. You get the idea.

I grew up 75 miles south of Buffalo and did a year of college there myself. The person who warned you about the weather is right, you really want to be aware of what you're getting when it comes to winter weather. Only a few years ago there were two winter blizzards that dropped 7 feet of snow (both times), one was on Christmas day and the other was on New Years! In the summer it gets hot and very humid, it can rival your own San Diego at times. If you don't need to have a car, it shouldn't be a problem getting around.

Your best bet is to get on-line and visit Buffalo.com http://www.buffalo.com/ to research the region and it's public services as well as rents and other necessary things to know. Come out and give it a visit if you can as well. There's nothing like actually being in a place, walking around the Allentown art festival or down at the Marina on Lake Erie - brief trip to Niagara Falls, or better yet head up to Canada and Fort Erie for the day!

In any event, do some more research and good luck no matter what you decide.

Cheers

I'm from Rochester,NY and my son attended college in Buffalo, he lived off campus for most of his undergraduate career and was able to support himself with a part time job and student loans. One thing you may not be aware of is the Lake Effect in upstate New York, Buffalo is on the eastern shore of Lake Eris and when it snows you may think you have moved to Alaska. So be prepared for snow and heating bills. Buffalo has a great public transportation system and you should be able to get to most places by buss or trolley.

Always try to get together with other students so you can rent a house in a better enighborhood. Do not live next to a crack house! Buffalo has a lot of snow. Sometimes it snows as much as 3 feet in 1 day. You will get good experience driving in snow. Do you have some friends who are going to school in Buffalo?

i might say sell what you are able to, and purely purchase new fixtures here!!!..youll have extra funds and much less stuff. i know alot of your fixtures is somewhat very own for you, yet each from time to time you certainly gotta do what you gotta do.
