Hire someone who has good references. Look in the telephone book under pest control. It's the only way togo.

It does not matter how clean you keep your house, roaches will visit and not want to leave. Professional exterminators can get rid of them for a while, but like a bad dream or an ex , they come back.
The best and permanent way I have found is to freeze them out. Winterize your plumbing system and turn off the heat,(turn off the water, blow out the water lines with compressed air, empty the water heater, and put RV antifreeze in the drains, toilet tank and bowl). Stay out of your home for at least 48 hours and count the dead. I say this from years of experience working with used mobile homes. Of course if you live in the deep south where roaches are big as Volkswagens and it rarely freezes for an extended period, you are in the hands of a professional exterminator.

I've tried the oft-repeated boric acid method (several variations, in fact), and it didn't help one iota. Ditto for foggers, sprays and Combat gel. Nothing worked until I found MaxForce. I applied this stuff as directed and the majority of the roaches were gone within three days. A week later and they were completely eradicated. This was accomplished using one tube, and the infestation was pretty extreme.

I've had to use this stuff twice now (in two different homes) and it works wonders.

Here is some information:

"Maxforce FC Cockroach Control Gel is the #1 choice of pest control professionals for two reasons: it's surprisingly effective and easy to use!

Maxforce contains Fipronil, a very potent roach killer. Fipronil's mode of action sets it apart from most commercial insecticides currently on the market. Fipronil disrupts the roach's central nervous system by blocking the passage of chloride ions through the GABA receptor, an inhibitor of the central nervous system. This causes hyperexcitation of contaminated roaches' nerves and muscles. While many classes of insecticides affect the central nervous system, no other class has this specific effect. And one single application of Maxforce just keeps killing and killing -- for up to six months!

How can a product like Maxforce provide such long lasting protection? Simple; through a domino effect! One dead cockroach can result in up to 44 other dead roaches, since the others will feed on its carcass and feces.

It has a very broad label, allowing you to apply it in residential food processing areas, occupied rooms in hospitals, nursing homes and extended care facilities. It's a much safer alternative to chemical treatments; Maxforce is practically non-toxic by ingestion.

Apply Maxforce bait placements in areas of high roach traffic, preferably within 12 inches of frequently trafficked routes. Kitchens, bathrooms, and garages are all ideal candidates. Stay low to the baseboard, around water pipes and in dark crevices.

Maxforce is a professional product that contains Fipronil and CANNOT be bought at discount Stores."

If you follow the directions (and make sure you get those pipes under the sinks), you'll get rid of them. Below is a link to where you can buy a tube for only $9.99:

Or if you don't want to subject yourself and your family to all of those chemicals which are designed to kill things, you can fix it without any chemicals. Go to the pet store and buy a male and a female gecko. Turn them loose behind your refrigerator. They will hide there by day and build themselves a nest close to the compressor. At night when you go to bed, they clock in and go to work, eating thousands of roaches. You will rarely ever see the geckos, unless you happen upon one at night. Occasionally, they make a noise that sounds like they are saying "Gecko", that's how they got their name. They will eventually lay a couple eggs and have baby geckos which the pet store will buy from you.

ALL THE OTHER ADVICE IS GOOD TO...BUT CLEAN WITH BLEACH OR AMMONIA BUT DO NOT MIX THEM! THERE IS A BETA GEL YOU CAN APPLY TO AREAS LIKE UNDERNEATH THE SINK AND IN SMALL CRACKS THIS IS A FOOD SOURCE THAT EVENTUALLY KILLS THEM. ALSO GET SOME BORIC ACID IT IS A POWDER SUBSTANCE THAT YOU PUT AROUND THE BASE BOARDS OF YOUR HOUSE AND IN YOUR CABINETS. KEEP CHILDREN AND PETS AWAY AND OUT OF IT! GOOD LUCK AND CONTINUE THE GOOD FIGHT.

if you can locate where they are entering your house, use whatever spray or powder you are comfortable with, around the opening.
In the openings and cracks cram steel wool, even roaches can't get through it.
