You need to go back to the website where you purchased the coin. Here you get an activation code. Write this down and then log into geocaching.com. Now activate the coin.

You can give the coin a mission or different name or description to get it started. As for the code that's on the coin itself. That's pretty permanent and is used when people wanna look at your coin and log in that they've seen it. The Groundspeak forums are a good place to see FAQ stuff.

There are two kinds of codes. One is the activation code, where you register the geocoin with the geocaching website. Usually there will be a web address that comes with the coin that tells you how to get the activation code for your coin. Once you activate the coin, you can throw that away as it no longer has any use.

The second code is the one on the coin itself, the tracking number. When someone finds the coin, they enter the tracking number to indicate that they have indeed found the coin, along with their log. As the coin passes from cache to cache, others can enter the number, and thus the coin's travels are recorded.

However, you might have bought the geocoins for your personal collection. A lot of coin collectors take their geocoins with them to geocaching event to show others. Some allow fellow geocachers to log these coins as finds by allowing them to record the tracking number for later entry. With the new "Discovered it" log type, a cacher can claim their "find" without having to move the coin, which allows the collector to hold onto his or her collection.

Hope that helps.
