The greenhouse effect is caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases (CO2, O3, CH4, H2O) in the upper parts of the atmosphere.

These gases form layers there which act as a glass wall: lets the sunlight in, keeps some of the warm inside. This phenomena is essential for the survival of life on Earth, but, of course, if there is a too large quantity of greenhouse gases out there... it will lead to overheating our cute "greenhouse" - that is what they call global warming, then.

Hope you liked my answer, I tried not to overcomplicate or over-scientify it. :-)

The greenhouse effect has to do with global warming and the ozone layer. The ozone layer is getting smaller, which means there are more greenhouse gases in the air, which causes the temperture to rise more than it should.
