on any car/truck that has drums for every two sets of front pad you will replace the rear brake shoes once unless you hear any noise then pull the drum off to check and make sure nothing broke or anything got up in the shoes.

when they are worn out. seriously though get your mechanic to check it when you get your oil changed. he can take a peek through a little hole in the backing plate to see the thickness of your brakes. if its close change them cause brake shoes have no sensor that will squeal when the get low like on front brake pads.

If you hear any kind of screeching or squealing sound when braking, definitely get them checked. I would have them inpected every six months or so if you drive a lot.
