Hierarchy developed out the concept of Divinity. No kidding.The first rulers were noticed by the population to have wisdom, and a keen observation of nature. These people became rulers because it was proven by trial and error that the wisdom they imparted created success for all of them.People interpreted this as having a direct communication with the gods or God. Also in some cultures such as the Benin people the rulers WERE God. As the cultures thrived, Divine knowledge was handed down to the heirs, thus hierarchy. Living, and ruling in accordance with nature and gods, or God, or Divinely was considered living or ruling "in Christ" thousands of years before Jesus.
