are you a freelance copywriter? do you have advice for me?

I am an English grad who would like to be her own boss. I am 100% confident in my writing and editing skills, but am unsure how to break into the copywriting world. I've tried doing cold-calls (hi, i'm a copywriter who helps companies create brochures, web-content and other copy.would you be interested in receiving some information on my services?), and doing mass-mailouts, but my responses have been low and i'm getting discouraged. what do i do?

how did you get started?
am i being unrealistic?
what is your biggest mistake?
what is your best advice?
should i targert mid-sized companies, or go for big ones? (i don't have a very great book yet).
how do you approach big companies?

i'm learning as i go, but i am getting really discouraged. i can't do my current job forever!

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

portfolio school, hate to say it... but you wanna play on this level you need a kick *** book... that is the only thing people look at... i sit right next to a recruiter at a major agency (i'm an art director) and they ONLY look at books...
