Windows 98 first edition does not support USB at all. iether try and get an upgrade disk to get to 98 Second edition or pirate windows 98 Se edition cd, format the drive and start over with windows 98 second edition.
Sadly what the other guy said is true form the 11th of JULY 2006 windows 98 and ME will no longer be supported in any form by microsoft. this basically means that in about 6 months nothing that is released will be fully compatible with windows 98 SE. A lot of software and hardware being released does not support windows 98, except for viruses and spyware.

Maybe it's time to save some cash for anew computer or switch to linux. For older pc's i reccommend UBUNTU.

You need Windows 98SE to use most flash drives, and newer USB devices. You can download drivers from the web, or use Windows Update to get some* drivers.
(* Microsoft gets to choose what drivers will be put on Windows Update, and most of those drivers are only for hardware, like a graphics card, or sound card, or even a modem.)

Well, back when that computer first came out, no one thought about USB drivers, so it's not likely that it will be compatible with your computer. Buy a new one. My mom just bought this Dell that I'm on for $400 dollars, and it works great.
