Reagan's administration went beyond supporting them. They organized them. They collected radical Islamists from around the world, the most violent, crazed elements they could find, and tried to forge them into a military force in Afghanistan. You could argue that would have been legitimate if it had been for the purpose of defending Afghanistan. But it wasn’t. In fact, it probably prolonged the war in Afghanistan. It looks from the Russian archives as though they were ready to pull out in the early 1980s, and this prolonged the war. But that wasn’t the point. The point was to harm the Russians, not to defend the Afghans. So, the mujahideen were carrying out terrorist activities right inside Russia, based in Afghanistan. Incidentally, those terrorist activities stopped after the Russians pulled out of Afghanistan, because what they were trying to do is just what they say, in their terminology, protect Muslim lands from the infidels. When the infidels pulled out, they stopped carrying out terrorist attacks in Russia from Afghanistan.
Iraq is the new area where due to US actions, has created a re-action which has (regardless of what lies they tell) has made the world, the US, LESS safe, by gathering terrorists, and in no way addressing the root causes of terrorism.

What makes you think this is a terrorist training camp? This is no more a terrorist camp than the Boy Scouts, Baptist retreats or going to Graceland for Elvis's birthday. Here is a good question if you are studying for the SAT. The Muslim religion is to Al Qauda as the Christian Religion is to _______. Answer: The KKK. Boy are you stupid.

The Regan administration funded the Afghanistan revolutinaries. The Mujahideen, but the funding of them started with Carter.
The Mujahideen weren't 'one group' of people. They were groups of 'tribes' who fought with a common cause. After the Soviet Union left Afghanistan, the tribes fought amongst themselves, with the Taliban faction coming out on top with the help of the ISI (Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence)

Dear brain cell you have not done your homework on the Russo-Afghan war. You do not know for example who received direct aid from the CIA and who received aid from Pakistan and her Arab allies. Pakistan worked with us but remained an independent agent. Let me connect some dots.
1. Masood and Dostun who were Northern Alliance received direct aid from the CIA. They operated around Jalabad and in The Panjir Valley. There was a Russian Airbase in Jalabad Stingers were deployed there and in the Panjir only.
2. The Taliban and Al Queda operated in the South around Khandahar They received aid from Pakistan and other moslem countries.
3. Gubbidin Hemectyar (sp) received aid from Iran he operated in Helmand province.
4. #2 and #3 were aliied and fought the Northern Alliance.
5. Thus explains how Kabul ended up in Taliban occupation

NO!!! It was the Clinton and Gore administration that encouraged the terrorist training camps, you'd better get your facts together before you post your "questions" on this forum.

Why yes, it did. We funded the Taliban until it became inconvenient to do so.
That's why John Walker Lindh, the "American Taliban", got such a raw deal. He was over in Afghanistan to fight with the Taliban, and while he was there the American policy flip flopped and they were suddenly our enemy. He got arrested and prosecuted for conspiracy.

I am so into answering your questions today.
Let's not forget the fact we supported Saddam Hussein during the Reagan years as well.
And we knew who we were getting in bed with. His first day of office, he had his political enemies executed.
The Mujaheddin under Bin Laden offered to help fight for us in the first Gulf War. We dismissed them like they were nothing. They hated Saddam as much as we did, if not more. In their eyes, he was an even bigger infidel.

Anyone who hates the commies is perfect. The terrorist who attacked us have a pass, they fought the reds. The Iraqi have oil, though, so we can use the Saudis as an excuse for Iraqi invasion. It was then I knew you didn't have to be intelligent to be a goddamn genius.

It is verified. Now, did he do it intentionally? Obviously not.
Short-sighted foreign policy always risks such unintended consequenses.
I'm afraid that Bush 2's decision to go to war in Iraq is going to be one of those massive mistakes that will end up leading to further disasters in the long run.
