People don't donate more because some are afraid of needles, some still have misconceptions (there are still people who believe you can contract HIV from donating blood), or lack of convenience... just lazy. Also, especially with the declining average level of health among Americans, there are probably a good number of people who aren't eligible to donate blood, either because of high triglycerides, anemia, various conditions such as sickle cell, or any number of diseases or potential for infection from high risk activities (sex with multiple partners, habitual drug use, or visits to nations known to have bloodborne pathogens endemic to their areas)

I do when I can, but I don't always know when the next blood drive is, and the blood bank is in downtown Indianapolis, while I live quite a ways away, and I can't drive. Plus, I have a problem with the way ours is set up. The group we donate to is not the Red Cross--it is a private organization that sells the blood to the Red Cross. Somehow, I don't feel like I'm helping out as much that way.

No, I have never given blood. There are a couple of reasons why I haven't. Firstly, I am afraid of needles. Secondly, I live too far out to go to any blood drives, or any other place to give blood. If there was a close place where I could give blood, I would probably do it and just face my fear of needles.
I respect everyone that gives blood and think that it is wonderfully thoughtful.

I have given blood because one pint can save up to three lives. That's an amazing thought. Besides, I hope that if I ever need blood, someone out there has given for me. So I should be returning the favor.
