It depends on what you are looking for:
1) Speed: Optimum is the BEST cable provider out there. It will far exceed Verizon DSL, but will PALE behind Verizon FIOS!
You did not specify WHICH Verizon service you are opting for?!
2) Price: Here Verizon clearly wins. Whether DSL or FIOS, Verizon is considerably less $$ unless you opt for the highest level of service (If you REALLY need SPEED this may be your best choice, though, anyway!)

Verizon is great and cheap compare to cable providers such as Opitimum. I had verizon for over 3 yrs. I had to cancell it but i jus reordered it again.

I've tried both and Optimum works a lot better to me.
