New York's highest court ruling same-sex unions are not allowed under state law.

In New York, the Court of Appeals said in a 4-2 decision that the state's marriage law is constitutional and clearly limits marriage to a union between a man and a woman.

No. Because the courts have no basis for overturning this law. This was law passed and enacted by the peoples' elected representatives. The law clearly is legal and within the state constitutional guidelines.

Some people may not agree with the decision, but they had no basis for overturning it.

I'm not surprised, disappointed maybe, but not surprised.

I don't understand the big debate about same sex marriages. What people do in their bedroom is their own business. Nobody on this planet has the authority to tell someone that because they love someone so much and want to spend the rest of their lifetime with them that they can't do it. People who choose to live a gay/lesbian lifestyle are no less of a human than heterosexuals. They can be just as loving and compassionate, and responsible as hetersexual people. They are doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, they are all over this great planet of ours. They pay taxes, they go to work, they go to school, in my opinion if they don't have the right to marry, then don't tax them. Gay and Lesbian salaries pay government wages, and pay for goverment programs too. They support our military(and serve in it) with those taxes too. So what gives anyone the right to tell them that they are not ALLOWED to marry because of what they do behind closed doors(or even PDA..public displays of affection). People just have to make an issue about something that is clearly not a big deal.

I don't think that's right. They obey laws like everyone else, pay taxes like everyone else, but they just can't get married. That's pretty sad. The bible says marriage is right between man and woman, NOT the constitution. There is suppose to be a separation of church and state. So if the government is going to sit there and say a christmas tree is a holiday tree and kids can't sing "we wish you a merry christmas" in a program, and then contradict themselves by listening to a percentage of voters due to their religious reasons and not a justified solid non religious reason, that it's not right(same sex marriages), they are not being very justified in their actions to not allow two people of the same sex to marry.

Just my opinion, because you asked.

Not really. Nothing that is passed down by beaurocrats surprises me anymore. They aren't going to stop it. People will still get married. They just won't get the tax breaks. Give it time. This law too shall crumble, just like all other discrimination laws have (women, blacks, etc). Just be patient.

Nope. Frankly I'm tired of hearing about gay marriage. If Bush never brought it up in the first place I would be perfectly content to still not care about it.
The only people who care about it are gay people and christian fundies. So I guess they do have something in common.

To the people who say they are glad about the ruling. Why do you care? How does it affect your life? That's what's so lame about this issue. It's a non-issue, yet G.W. tries to make it one. I would think he has more important things to think about and work on, yet he continues to divide the country over this issue.

I'm not completely surprised...

your country is slowly turning into the very thing they profess to despise: a conservative theocracy.

just like Walt Kelly's Pogo quote:
"We have seen the enemy, and they is us!"
